Kos belongs to the Dodecanese chain of Greek islands, which are clustered round the Turkish coastline. The island is considered one of the best all-inclusive beach holiday destinations - largely due to its 25-mile stretch of magnificent sandy beaches, which line its long, narrow coastline. Kos Town and Kardamena are the two largest resorts, but hotels are now a feature on most beaches. Quieter Kos holidays are available in the smaller north-coast resorts.

Kos, the birthplace of Hippocrates, also offers a selection of cultural and historical sites. Well worth a visit is the famous Asklepeion hospital, built by the people of Kos to practise the teachings of Hippocrates. Other sites include the 14th-century Castle of the Knights and the attractive old town of Kos, with its winding streets and pretty cafes. Popular days out include boat excursions to the nearby Greek islands of Kalymnos, Patmos and Nissyros.

The scenery in Kos may not be as dramatic as neighbouring islands, due to its flat plains, but this has made it a popular destination for cycling holidays. Bicycles are available for hire all over the island. Visitors can explore the charming countryside along numerous cycle paths. Nightlife on the island of Kos caters for all tastes: visitors can enjoy bars with live music and dancing, tavernas serving traditional Greek dishes, and a lively clubbing scene.
